Racial Equity and the law: Free UA Course by Professor Brant T Lee
Racial Equality and the Law
Differing perspectives about racial equality and the law have been a core conflict in America from its founding until the present day. Some issues have been resolved through the progress of history and changes in beliefs and attitudes. But change brings other issues, and some feel things have gone “too far.” Conflict over race continues to take the center stage in American politics and public life.
In this 12-week program of lectures, materials, and activities, Professor Brant T. Lee will guide an exploration of ways to interpret clashing narratives about race for those who want to understand our differences better. The focus will be on how law—in the form of Supreme Court decisions, anti-discrimination legislation, and Executive Orders—views racial equality, and how that has affected general public discourse.
Note from the Professor
There is much concern these days about certain perspectives or ideologies regarding race being used in some way to indoctrinate students. There is also concern about certain aspects of our history being erased or ignored. While I will try to present materials in a balanced and objective way, I have to make choices about what to present and how to present it in ways that not all will agree with. There is no purely objective way to have a substantive discussion about race.
While all perspectives are welcome, not all attitudes are. This effort will only be productive for those who are interested in trying to understand one another. This will not be a good venue to rehearse attack lines and well-worn arguments. We are trying to gain insight, not ammunition.
By enrolling, you agree that you are choosing to hear what I present. No one is required to participate in this program. You are presumed to be adults, capable of critical review of what you see and read. Not only are you not required to agree with me, but you are encouraged to articulate your disagreement in ways that help me to understand you.
Personal Note from Professor Brant T. Lee
After growing up in San Francisco and living in Boston and Washington, DC, my wife and I have now lived in Akron, Ohio, for twenty-eight years. We have raised our children and established our careers here. I have been reading, writing, and teaching about race for over twenty-five years and have seen the widely differing perceptions and misperceptions that Americans have of each other. This background gives me a unique perspective to lead an inquiry into racial conflict in America.
In 2020, I offered a free online course on race and the law that attracted over 5,000 registrants. This program is derived from that class.

The Freedom Bloc Safety Meeting
FREEDOM BLOC Monthly safety meeting
Join us every fourth Tuesday of the month from 6:00pm - 8:00pm at 848 W Exchange St, OH 44302
Reimagining Safety: A Community-Driven Approach
For too long, when Akronites and Americans think of safety, our minds default to traditional emergency services like police and fire departments. However, the experiences of our communities—marked by instances of police brutality, deaths at the hands of law enforcement, and a mass incarceration crisis that has resulted in a higher number of incarcerated individuals today than the number of enslaved people in the 1800s—have made it clear: the conventional approach to safety is not serving the average American.
The Freedom BLOC believes that true safety lies within the strength and well-being of our community itself. Over the next two years, we will embark on a crucial journey alongside the residents of Akron to collectively define what safety truly means. Our city, like many others, can no longer sustain the disproportionate allocation of taxpayer dollars to a system that has not demonstrably ensured the safety and well-being of all its members.
We aim to critically examine the very definitions of "safety" and "crime." What constitutes a threat to our community? Is it the individual working diligently for 40 hours a week who feels compelled to take necessities from a store to feed their family? Or is the true injustice the systemic failure that allows someone working full-time to remain unable to afford basic sustenance? How does our current model of safety address these fundamental issues?
SAFETY CAMPAIGN PLANNING 2025
Purpose: To cultivate a shared, community-driven understanding of safety and to collaboratively develop a safety plan that emphasizes collective action and shared responsibility.
Desired Outcomes:
Expand the Definition of Safety: To move beyond a solely law enforcement-centric view and embrace a holistic understanding that encompasses social, economic, and environmental well-being.
Deepen Community Engagement: To actively involve residents in the process of defining safety and shaping solutions.
Cultivate Community Leaders: To identify, support, and empower individuals within the community to champion safety initiatives.
Shift the Narrative on Safety: To foster a public discourse that recognizes the limitations of current policing models and highlights the importance of community-led solutions.

Civic Saturday Akron began in 2024 with a handful of neighbors hosting gatherings designed in a model developed by Citizen University in Seattle. In Akron, they took shape as vibrant intergenerational gatherings of 80 to 100 people in an old church-turned-family-home in Highland Square. Word spread, and in 2025, Citizen University brought their Seattle team to Akron to train nineteen Fellows in the Civic Saturday Fellowship program. We are proud to be their first city-focused cohort out of 27 graduating classes. Subscribe to the Civic Saturday newsletter for upcoming events and opportunities hosted by the Civic Saturday Akron Fellows.
